800 Future Healthcare Professionals Get Ready for HOSA Conference

An upcoming health conference is expected to draw 800 of South Dakota’s future doctors, nurses, and hospital administrators. HOSA, a career prep program for high school and college-aged students, aims to immerse the next generation of health care workers in the reality of the job. Brock Rops, the executive director of the South Dakota HOSA chapter, believes these events reflect the reality of the career field. He emphasizes the importance of finding a calling in one’s work and being able to pivot when faced with challenges.

Rops compares HOSA events to FFA for future health care professionals, offering presentation, project-based, and skill-based events in various health care fields. He sees these events as opportunities for students to build confidence and explore the broad spectrum of health care careers. While most students are interested in patient care careers, there are also those who are interested in administration, IT, research, and engineering.

The conference will be hosted at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls on April 11 and 12. Top finishers will have a chance to qualify for the upcoming international HOSA conference in Houston, Texas. These events provide students with valuable experience and a platform to explore their interests and passions in the health care industry.
