The government is committed to accelerating the adoption of green hydrogen technology in Malaysia to achieve the RM12 billion revenue target by 2030 through the hydrogen economy. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Chang Lih Kang, emphasized that the ministry’s current focus is on increasing the demand, usage, and generation of green hydrogen in the country. He highlighted the importance of hydrogen in transforming energy sources into cleaner alternatives and creating a new ecosystem.

During a media briefing in Putrajaya, Chang discussed the potential of the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR) to position Malaysia favorably in the global green hydrogen market, which is expected to reach US$189.19 billion by 2050. The HETR aims to generate significant revenue and contribute substantially to the nation’s GDP by 2030. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also expressed optimism about the roadmap’s potential and witnessed a demonstration of the Mobile Hydrogen Refueling Unit (MHRU) and a ride in a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai.

The MHRU is a mobile hydrogen refueling technology designed for vehicles, providing flexibility in moving it from one location to another. The Toyota Mirai is an electric vehicle powered by hydrogen fuel cells, with water as the only byproduct. Chang announced that the MHRU will be launched in Putrajaya later this year to educate the public about hydrogen technology. He emphasized the advantages of hydrogen-powered vehicles, such as quick refueling times, long travel ranges, and lighter vehicle weights.

Chang highlighted that the refueling process for hydrogen vehicles takes only three to five minutes for a full refill, allowing the vehicle to travel between 700-1,000 kilometers per refuel. This efficiency and convenience make hydrogen-powered vehicles a promising option for sustainable transportation in the future.
