April 2024: Celebrating National Minority Health Month

April is National Minority Health Month, a time to raise awareness about the health disparities that exist among racial and ethnic minority and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. The goal of this annual observance is to encourage everyone to take action to end these inequities and improve health outcomes for all individuals.

This year’s theme, Be the Source for Better Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections, focuses on understanding how the unique environments, cultures, histories, and circumstances of racial and ethnic minority and AI/AN populations impact their overall health. These factors, collectively known as social determinants of health (SDOH), play a significant role in shaping individuals’ health and wellness.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) is dedicated to partnering with public health and community-based organizations to Be the Source for Better Health. Their mission is to provide quality, equitable, and respectful care and services that are responsive to diverse cultural health beliefs and practices, preferred languages, economic and environmental circumstances, and health literacy levels.

By offering culturally and linguistically appropriate information to patients, healthcare providers can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. This, in turn, can lead to improved health outcomes for not only patients themselves but also their families and communities. By working together to address health disparities and promote health equity, we can create a healthier and more inclusive society for all.
