Baltimore Bridge Collapse: Ship’s Crew Rescues Lives, Six Still Missing

According to authorities, several workers fell into the waters of the Patapsco River while repairing potholes on a bridge in Baltimore. Governor Moore declared a state of emergency and large forces began searching for the missing individuals. Two workers were rescued, with one in serious condition. Six people are still missing, and the search continues using boats and divers. Five vehicles were found underwater, but no victims were found inside.

Photographs of the accident show the ship losing power before striking the bridge support. Work crews were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Sonar detected multiple vehicles in the water, which is approximately 50 feet deep. The ship’s lights went out suddenly and the vessel changed direction, leading to the collision. An emergency message was sent about the electricity problem, helping to save lives.

The collapse of the bridge, which opened in 1977 and is part of Interstate 695, is expected to halt activity at the port of Baltimore. This will affect the export and import shipments of vehicles, particularly from Nissan, Toyota, and General Motors. More than 40 vessels are stranded in the port, and at least thirty scheduled arrivals will likely be diverted to other east coast ports.
