Entrepreneur Launches Glass Blowing Company

A new small business has opened its doors in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and it is the second of its kind in the state. Sweaty Glass, owned by Shane Spickard, specializes in the mesmerizing art of glass blowing.

Spickard’s passion for glass blowing began when he attended the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee. He fell in love with the art form and has been honing his skills ever since 2019. Now, he has transformed a garage into his own glass making factory where he creates unique and stunning glass pieces such as cups, vases, and other decorations.

The process of creating these masterpieces is intricate and fascinating. Spickard starts by heating the glass to a high temperature before adding colorful frit to create designs on the surface. He then uses various tools to sculpt and shape the piece while blowing air through a blowpipe to help inflate it. Wet newspaper is even used to shape some of his creations! After smoothing out any rough edges with a torch, the piece is placed in a stove for 12 hours to cool down completely.

Sweaty Glass is located at 144 W 10th Avenue in Bowling Green and offers classes for anyone interested in learning the art of glass blowing. Whether you’re an experienced artist or just starting out, Spickard’s classes will teach you everything you need to know to create your own beautiful glass pieces at home.
