Braves’ ace Spencer Strider scheduled for MRI after experiencing elbow pain in Friday’s start

Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Saturday following his recent start against the Arizona Diamondbacks where he reported discomfort in his elbow. The 25-year-old pitcher had a challenging outing on Friday, with reduced fastball velocity and effectiveness as he gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings pitched.

Despite his struggles in that game, Strider has been a standout starting pitcher in the league over the past few seasons. He has put up impressive numbers with a career 3.37 ERA and a 4.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In 2023, he finished fourth in Cy Young Award voting and had a 115 ERA+ and a 13.5 strikeouts per nine rate.

If Strider does need to spend time on the injured list, the Braves have several options to fill his rotation spot. Young pitchers like AJ Smith-Shawver and Bryce Elder, as well as more experienced starters like Dylan Dodd, Allan Winans, and Huascar Ynoa could step up to help fill the void.

The Braves had a tough game on Friday but managed to pull off a win in extra innings, scoring three runs in the eighth and ninth to tie the game before securing the win in the 10th inning with a walk-off hit by Travis d’Arnaud. They will look to continue their series with the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
