Careerline Tech Center students dominate in diesel technology competition

A quartet of students from the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District’s Careerline Tech Center recently received recognition at the Regional SkillsUSA Diesel Equipment Technology competition held in Holland. The competition, which occurred at Lansing Community College on Feb. 23, saw students from CTC’s Diesel/Heavy Equipment Mechanics program securing top placements. Zackary DeKryger from Allendale High School secured first place in the Diesel Technology contest, while homeschool students Gavin Grifhorst and Jacob Moore achieved second place. Additionally, Zeeland student Tristan Overweg placed second in the Heavy Equipment Operator category.

During the competition, students had the opportunity to showcase their technical skills and knowledge in areas such as engine operation, drivetrain components, braking systems, electrical systems, and hydraulics. Soft skills were also evaluated through mock employment interviews. DeKryger expressed his excitement at the opportunity and his eagerness to continue competing at higher levels in the future. Each student will now advance to the state competition taking place on Saturday, April 13 in Grand Rapids.

The Diesel/HEM program at CTC offers a two-year course for students, with the first year focusing on learning about the operation, maintenance, and overhaul of diesel-powered equipment. In their second year, students delve into troubleshooting and repairing customer-owned equipment. Program instructor Jason Alberda emphasized the rewards of seeing students step out of their comfort zones and try new things, expressing pride in the program and its students’ achievements. The CTC team is looking forward to witnessing their continued success in the future.
