Carnival Dancers in Bad Schandau Criticized for Racist Portrayal of Refugees and Political Figures

Racism and Blackfacing at the Saxony Carnival Parade

In Bad Schandau, Saxony, a group of four carnival dancers paraded through the town on Saturday. They were dressed in African-looking dresses, with curly hair wigs and bright red lips. However, their display was not meant to be funny; instead, it was seen as pure racism. The group held a sign that read “The long snake from the savannah,” an obvious reference to refugees from Africa.

Despite protests and criticism last year over their portrayal of Winnetou on an “asylum ranch,” the carnival continued with its scandalous behavior. In 2020, they displayed a severed papier-mâché head of Greta Thunberg. This year, they decided to engage in Blackfacing by painting their faces black.

According to the Foundation Against Racism, Blackfacing is considered racist because it treats the identities and experiences of black people as a costume. The carnival participants also wore traditional African dresses and depicted black cartoon people in their costumes and posters. They even used an outdated print of a chocolate kiss packaging when they were still called “Negro kisses.”

The group’s latest actions sparked outrage and condemnation as they continued to engage in racially insensitive displays. They left little room for interpretation with their portrayal of German politician Annalena Baerbock by disguising her as rats next to her left a message that said “Annalena dreams of a green life but only the rats stick to her glue pot.” Despite this controversy, it remains unclear if any legal action will be taken against them for their behavior.

Overall, the Bad Schandau carnival has been criticized for its controversial and offensive behavior over the years. While some may see these displays as harmless fun, others view them as disrespectful and hurtful towards certain groups of people.

In conclusion, while some may find these displays amusing or entertaining, it is essential to recognize the harmful effects that such actions can have on marginalized communities. It is crucial for individuals and organizations to speak out against such behaviors and work towards creating a more inclusive society where everyone feels valued and respected regardless of their race or ethnicity.

As such, we must hold those who engage in such behaviors accountable for their actions and educate ourselves about how our words and actions impact others’ lives. We can all play our part in creating a more just and equitable world by standing up against racism wherever we see it.
