Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by Rocking Your Wackiest Socks and Support DSACO’s Awareness Campaign

World Down Syndrome Day falls on March 21, and the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma (DSACO) is encouraging the community to show their support by wearing silly socks and using the #Socks4DSACO hashtag. DSACO Executive Director, Sarah Soell, and self-advocate Drew Boswell recently spoke at the Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to discuss their upcoming events.

Soell emphasized that the day is about increasing awareness in the community and celebrating acceptance and inclusion for individuals with Down Syndrome. She highlighted that people with Down Syndrome are capable human beings who desire meaningful employment, the opportunity to attend college, and share similarities in dislikes just like everyone else. The awareness campaign aims to start conversations about differences and acknowledge the uniqueness of each individual.

Boswell shared her perspective on how special it feels when people celebrate individuals with Down Syndrome, including herself and her friends. March 21 signifies World Down Syndrome Day, symbolizing Trisomy 21, the genetic condition related to Down Syndrome. This genetic condition results from the presence of three copies of the 21st chromosome.

Upcoming events organized by DSACO in March include a Kite Party on March 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Stars and Stripes Park in Oklahoma City. Families are invited to bring kites and don their silly socks to commemorate the 21st chromosome. Additionally, on March 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., a Fundraising Luncheon will be held at 420 E. Britton Rd., hosted by the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma in partnership with the Central Oklahoma Homebuilders Association. Registration is required for the luncheon, and interested individuals can sign up through the provided link on the DSACO website.
