Come join us at the Hatfield Marine Science Center for a science fair and open house on Saturday, April 13th!

Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport will be hosting its annual science fair and open house on Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Marine Science Day is a family-friendly event that showcases marine research conducted on the Hatfield campus. This year’s theme is “Our Ocean, Our Future,” with activities and exhibits highlighting the technology used by researchers to better understand and monitor the ocean.

More than three dozen hands-on exhibits will be available for visitors to explore, addressing research topics such as marine birds and mammals, aquaculture, ocean noise, and fisheries. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about ocean engineering, interact with crabs and sea stars, observe plankton under microscopes, visit the Hatfield Visitor Center, and board the R/V Kalipi, a 29′ aluminum vessel used in nearshore research.

Two speakers from the Marine Mammal Institute’s Geospatial Ecology of Marine Megafauna (GEMM) Lab will discuss their use of drones to study baleen whales, including Antarctic minke whales, humpback whales, and Adelie penguins. The talk will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Carem Ford Phillips Auditorium in the Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building.

Due to high interest last year, behind-the-scenes tours have been expanded. The tour schedule includes opportunities to explore Hatfield’s Seawater System, the Yaquina Estuary Trail, Vertical Tsunami Evacuation routes, and aquaculture facilities. All tours are free, with tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis in the courtyard area at the Welcome Tent.

The event is open to all visitors and will provide a fun and educational experience for the whole family. The Hatfield Marine Science Center is located at 2030 SE Marine Science Drive in Newport, Oregon.
