Cowboys Part Ways with Michael Gallup and Leighton Vander Esch

The Cowboys have made the decision to release receiver Michael Gallup and linebacker Leighton Vander Esch due to failed physical designations, the team announced. Both moves were anticipated as the team had given Gallup permission to seek a trade, but no teams were interested in taking on his contract. Gallup had three years remaining on his current deal with significant cap hits, and with no trade options available, the Cowboys decided to release him.

It is likely that the Cowboys will designate Gallup as a post-June 1 cut, which will save them $9.5 million in cap space this year. However, they will still be on the hook for $8.7 million in dead money in 2025. Gallup’s performance had declined since an ACL tear during the 2021 season, with 73 receptions for 842 yards and six touchdowns over the past two seasons combined.

On the other hand, Vander Esch’s neck injuries have led to the expectation that he will retire. The 28-year-old, who was the 19th overall pick in 2019, will leave the game after 65 starts, 469 tackles, 13 pass breakups, and three interceptions. While the Cowboys will incur $2.2 million in dead money with his release, they will also save $2.2 million.

These moves signify significant changes for the Cowboys as they look to reshape their roster for the upcoming season. Both Gallup and Vander Esch had been key players for the team, but injuries and financial considerations have led to their departures. It remains to be seen how the Cowboys will adjust to these changes as they move forward.
