In the Atlantic 10 conference, Dayton is currently leading every other school by 58 spots. They are predicted to be the only team from the A-10 to make it to the 2024 NCAA Tournament, according to CBS Sports Bracketology Expert Jerry Palm. Despite this dominance, Dayton’s position as the top team in the league was challenged on Friday when they lost 49-47 at VCU. This loss left them just one game behind Richmond in the standings and cast doubt on their ability to win the outright conference championship that they were expected to get after a 13-game winning streak spanning three months.
After the loss, Dayton’s coach Anthony Grant acknowledged that it was not a great night for the team, particularly with their shooting performance of just 36.2% from the field and their tendency to give VCU too much credit. However, there is some good news for Dayton – their next seven games against top-75 teams in the NET are all at home, which should favor them in every remaining A-10 game. KenPom.com still projects Dayton to win the outright league championship, but with two weeks left in the season, it has become clear that the conference race will be closer than most anticipated it would be just a month ago.
