Detroit People Mover to temporarily close for technology upgrades

The Detroit People Mover was temporarily closed to the public on Monday for work being done on the guideway, officials announced on Sunday. The elevated public transportation system that circles Downtown Detroit was not in service on March 11th. The closure was necessary for track improvements and technology upgrades in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft.

According to officials, work on the track was needed to provide a better experience for People Mover riders. The closure was part of a series of upgrades planned ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, which is set to take place in Detroit at the end of April. The city has allocated millions of dollars for projects aimed at improving infrastructure and amenities in downtown areas.

The People Mover was scheduled to reopen at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12th. The 89th annual NFL Draft is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city, with events starting at Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza on Thursday, April 25 and running through Saturday, April 27. Some of the planned enhancements include sidewalk improvements, road upgrades, and better lighting to create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
