Deborah Zoe Laufer’s 2007 dramedy, End Days, presents intermittent moments of charm within a narrative that tries too hard to convey profundity and whimsy. The current revival by Theatre Above the Law, directed by Tony Lawry, is a sincere though somewhat disorganized production that doesn’t quite transcend the self-awareness of the script.

The story revolves around the Stein family who has relocated from New York in the aftermath of 9/11. Arthur, the father, is a recluse following the loss of 65 colleagues in the attack. Sylvia, the mother, has turned to religion to cope and their daughter Rachel has embraced a goth identity. The family dynamics are further complicated by Nelson, a teenager infatuated with Rachel, who introduces her to Stephen Hawking’s book A Brief History of Time. Sylvia becomes increasingly obsessed with the belief that the rapture is imminent, adding tension to their already strained relationships.

While Sylvia’s evangelism can be overwhelming at times, Laufer explores themes of faith and community through her portrayal of Arthur and Nelson’s bond. As Arthur helps Nelson prepare for his bar mitzvah, they subtly explore these themes against Sylvia’s fanatical approach. The exploration of science versus faith may feel predictable at times but Rachel’s growing wonder at the mysteries of the universe offers a poignant counterpoint to her personal struggles and sorrow. Overall End Days presents an engaging storyline about coping with loss and grief while exploring deeper themes such as faith and community in an entertaining way.
