Explore 15 New 3-D Animal Images for a Closer Look at These Species

The openVertebrate Project, also known as oVert, has used CT scans to reveal a wealth of information about the anatomy of thousands of animal specimens. Through these scans, researchers have gained insight into how these animals lived and reproduced, shedding light on their biology.

Their newly published images provide a look inside various creatures, including lizards, birds, rodents, and more. Over the next four years, the oVert team aims to CT scan an additional 20,000 museum specimens, expanding their database of digital representations of animal anatomy.

The project, founded in collaboration with 18 institutions, has already scanned over 13,000 museum specimens. These 3-D images offer a glimpse into the intricate biodiversity of numerous animal species.

By making their images publicly available, oVert aims to increase the accessibility of museum specimens for researchers and others interested in animal anatomy. The ability to remotely access and study this data removes barriers to collaboration and facilitates learning for scientists, teachers, students, and artists worldwide.
