First measles case reported in DuPage County in a decade

A DuPage County resident has recently been diagnosed with measles, marking the first case in the county since 2009. Health department officials have stated that the case does not seem to be linked to new migrant arrival shelters in Chicago, and the source of the infection remains unknown. The individual received outpatient medical care, and efforts are underway to identify and inform individuals who may have been exposed to the virus. As of now, no exposure locations have been pinpointed in DuPage County.

Measles is a severe respiratory infection known to cause symptoms such as rash and high fever, which can lead to pneumonia and other health complications. Common symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, and a distinctive rash that begins on the face and spreads across the body. Those who have been vaccinated against measles are likely protected but should be vigilant for symptoms for 21 days. If any symptoms arise during this period, they should contact their healthcare provider promptly.

According to Adam Forker, Executive Director of the DuPage County Health Department, staying up to date with measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccinations is crucial in protecting oneself and loved ones from measles. The MMR vaccine is highly effective in preventing measles and is considered the best defense against the virus for individuals of all ages. To learn more about measles and vaccination recommendations, residents can visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at https://www.cdc.gov/measles/index.html. Further information on Illinois measles cases can be found on the Illinois Department of Public Health website.
