France remains well equipped for 2024 Games despite heightened security concerns

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin attended a joint press conference where he discussed the country’s preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer, despite the tense security situation. According to Darmanin, France is well-prepared for various critical scenarios that may arise during the event.

Darmanin highlighted that the mobilization of law enforcement agencies will allow them to address the three major risks that could affect France during the summer: terrorism, migration surges from a collapsing country, and large forest fires. He emphasized that highly secured major events are paradoxically the safest places with the lowest probability of incidents, as demonstrated by past events such as the Rugby World Cup and visits by prominent figures like the Pope and the British royal family.

The Minister assured that there is no specific terrorist threat targeting the organization of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. To ensure the safety of the opening ceremony, which will not take place in a stadium for the first time in history, strict access restrictions will be implemented a week before the event. Residents in the area will need to apply for a QR code to access these areas and their homes.

Darmanin mentioned that 45,000 police officers will monitor the area leading up to the opening ceremony, where 326,000 spectators are expected to attend. The number of attendees may be reduced if necessary. Additionally, 2,500 foreign police and security forces, mostly armed, will protect their respective teams during the event.

Athletes will travel on 160 boats along a six-kilometer route across the Seine river, passing by iconic sights in Paris from the Pont d’Austerlitz to the Trocadéro. The opening ceremony is set to take place on July 26, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and success of the event.
