Gambling and debts ruined the career of renowned Roma singer Věra Bílá, who performed on many international stages.

Věra Bílá began her career with incredible talent that quickly propelled her to stardom. She sold out concert halls worldwide and received critical acclaim for her debut album Rom-Pop. Newspapers described her as a star and diva, and she even performed at private concerts for influential figures like Bill Clinton.

Bílá was known for singing in Romani, Czech, and Slovak, and was associated with the band Kale for many years. However, despite her success, she struggled with the demands of fame. She disliked traveling, especially because she couldn’t smoke on planes, and often let opportunities slip through her fingers. Her manager, Jiří Smetana, played a significant role in her career but ultimately, she was unable to maintain her success.

Despite arranging prestigious concerts and tours for Bílá, Smetana faced constant frustration as she frequently cancelled events due to illness or personal reasons. Critics noted that while she had immense talent, she lacked the work ethic and reliability needed to sustain her career. Bílá passed away in 2019 at the age of 64, leaving behind a legacy of great talent and unfulfilled potential.
