World Bank, Gates Foundation, and UN commit nearly $600 million to eradicate cervical cancer

During a global forum dedicated to fighting cervical cancer, international health donors pledged nearly $600 million towards eliminating the disease. The World Bank, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the U.N. children’s agency UNICEF announced that the funding would support expanding access to vaccination, screening, and treatment worldwide. Cervical cancer is a significant issue, with a woman dying from the disease roughly every two minutes, especially in low and middle-income countries where access to preventative measures can be limited.

Despite many high-income countries introducing the HPV vaccine in the 2000s, which protects against the virus that causes most cervical cancers, programs are still not reaching the scale required to make cervical cancer history. This is according to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). The Global Cervical Cancer Elimination forum in Cartagena, Colombia provided an opportunity for governments and global health partners to commit to working together to end the disease.

The WHO has endorsed countries switching to a one-dose vaccination strategy to protect more girls. Countries like Democratic Republic of Congo have pledged to start introducing the shot as soon as possible. The World Bank will commit $400 million over three years towards this collective effort, with $180 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and $10 million from UNICEF. This funding aims significantly reduce the burden of cervical cancer worldwide.
