Hamilton County Health Department to Host Poison Prevention Event

March is Poison Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about accidental poisoning and educate the public, especially regarding children. In partnership with the Indiana Poison Control Center (IPC), the Hamilton County Health Department will be hosting a free webinar on Wednesday, March 27 at 6 p.m. The goal is to inform parents and caregivers about common household hazards, effective child-proofing techniques, and what to do in an emergency.

According to Jim Ginder, Health Education Specialist at the Hamilton County Health Department, over 90 percent of poisonings occur at home. Their aim is to provide valuable information to prevent poisoning incidents and ensure the safety of children. Adam Overberg, Clinical Toxicologist and IPC Director, emphasizes that most poison exposures can be managed at home with assistance from a specialist. Calling IPC is quick, confidential, and can prevent unnecessary visits to urgent care or the emergency room.

Registration for the webinar is free and open to the public. Interested individuals can register at tinyurl.com/poisonpreventionwebinar. In case of a suspected poisoning incident involving a child, parents should immediately call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for expert advice and guidance. The ultimate goal is to create a safe environment for children and prevent harmful exposures.
