Health officials in Nassau issue warning of possible measles exposure at Cohen Children’s Medical Center

The Nassau County Department of Health reported a potential exposure to measles at the Cohen Children Medical Center Emergency Department waiting room and treatment area earlier this week. The exposure occurred from 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20 until 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21. Cohen Children’s Medical Center is contacting patients who visited the emergency department during this time and has identified high-risk patients who may require timely treatment.

According to a news release sent out Sunday, the best way to prevent measles is to be vaccinated. Northwell Health released a statement confirming that a patient with measles was admitted to the emergency department on March 21 and is currently in stable condition. The patient was isolated upon admission. Measles is a highly infectious viral respiratory illness that poses a risk to the unvaccinated.

News 12 reported that a Nassau County resident has been confirmed to have the third case of measles in the state this year, according to the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). This is the first case of measles outside of New York City in the state. The NYSDOH urges individuals to stay informed about measles outbreaks and to consider vaccination to prevent the spread of the virus.
