Denny Hamlin’s hopes for a third NASCAR Cup Series victory this season were dashed during overtime at the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. As Hamlin raced door-to-door with Chase Elliott for the lead during the green-white-checkered finish, his No. 11 Toyota spun sideways and collided with the outside wall, ending his chances of a top-two finish.
Hamlin, who has already secured wins at Bristol Motor Speedway and Richmond Raceway this season, led 37 laps at Texas Motor Speedway, including a 15-lap stint in the closing 21 laps. Despite his strong performance throughout the race, he was forced to settle for a 30th place finish after the overtime accident.
This marks the third time in the past five races that Hamlin has finished outside of the top 10, despite leading laps in each of the season’s first nine races. However, the two occasions where he did secure top 10 finishes in the past five races resulted in victories for him.
The situation is still developing and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
