Hundreds of students gain practical experience in the healthcare field

Hundreds of high school students from Western New York gathered in Batavia for an event focused on exploring careers in the health care industry. With nearly 600 students from Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming counties, the event provided an opportunity for students to meet professionals from various health care fields, including EMS, holistic medicine, nursing, and vet technician sessions.

Angela Grouse, Co-Chair of GLOW With Your Hands and Education to Employment Director at the Livingston County Area Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the high demand for health care providers in the region. She noted that if all the students attending the event were to enter the workforce, there would still be openings available.

During the event, students had the chance to learn about different health care careers and gain hands-on experience. For example, student Ava Matla expressed interest in becoming an x-ray technician after exploring the radiology program. Another student, Allison Williams, found the nursing session to be informative and engaging.

Fernando Cacho, a student interested in becoming an emergency room physician, shared his experience of receiving practical tips for managing sinus issues from health care professionals at the event. The sessions covered a wide range of careers in EMS, mental health, physical therapy, radiology, vet technician, social work, respiratory therapy, speech pathology, surgery, and research science.
