The Hungarian National Blood Transfusion Service (HNBTS) operates as the primary centralized provider of blood component products to hospitals across the country, with five regional service centers and 19 regional blood supply stations. The process of replacing cesium irradiation devices took place in phases, starting with Debrecen and Budapest in 2021, followed by Pecs in 2022. The final replacement occurred at the Szeged Regional Blood Center in December, signifying Hungary’s complete shift to alternative technologies for blood irradiation.

By replacing cesium irradiators with X-ray technology, Hungary has reduced the risk of theft and misuse of radioactive sources, enhancing safety measures across the blood transfusion process. In addition to eliminating radiological risks associated with cesium irradiation, X-ray irradiators offer higher capacity for irradiating blood products in a quicker time frame. Dr. Klara Baroti-Toth, Quality Assurance-Quality Control Director at HNBTS, noted that the country’s five regional centers process over 550,000 units of blood annually to meet the needs of Hungary’s 9.7 million population.

Efficiency in processing is crucial due to the constant demand for transfusable blood. The older cesium irradiators had diminishing throughput each year due to source decay, necessitating additional security measures and maintenance costs. The transition to X-ray technology not only provided a permanent risk reduction but also eliminated security expenses. Collaborating with ORS facilitated a seamless switch from cesium to X-ray technology, ensuring uninterrupted service to hospitals during the transition period.
