In 2023, China sees halt in 9-year decline in new marriages, as divorces continue to rise

The wedding industry has seen a significant rebound as the effects of the pandemic start to fade. A surge in spending was observed during the 2023 Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, highlighting a renewed interest in weddings and celebrations. Despite this upturn, spending on wedding banquets decreased by 10 to 15 percent compared to the previous year, according to a white paper released by China Wedding Expo.

Marriage rates in China have been declining since 2013, with concerns mounting about the aging population and low birth rates. To address this issue, the Chinese government introduced incentives for larger families with the implementation of the three-child policy in May 2021, following the end of the one-child policy in 2016. The decline in marriage rates has been attributed to factors such as high costs associated with starting a family, gender imbalances, and changing attitudes among young people towards marriage and settling down.

The average age for first marriages has increased significantly over the years, with men marrying at around 29.38 years old and women at 27.95 years old in 2020. The number of divorce cases has also been on the rise, with millions of couples registering for uncontested divorces each year. In 2022, there were nearly 780,000 contested divorces, bringing the total number of divorce proceedings to almost 2.9 million – a 1.4 percent increase from the previous year. Official data for contested divorces adjudicated or mediated by the courts in 2023 is yet to be released.
