Researchers from Unitary Fund, Qruise GmbH, Technical University of Valencia, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and others collaborated on a technical paper titled “Open Hardware Solutions in Quantum Technology.” The paper discusses the opportunities for advanced research and development in quantum technologies such as communications, computing, and sensing.

The researchers argue that while there is an existing open-source ethos in some aspects of quantum technologies, there are additional advantages to developing open quantum hardware (OQH). This includes open-source software for controlling quantum devices, blueprints and toolkits for chip design, and openly-accessible testbeds and facilities that allow cloud access to a wider scientific community. The paper provides an overview of current projects in the OQH ecosystem, identifies gaps, and makes recommendations on how to address them.

The researchers believe that expanding open quantum hardware would accelerate technology transfer and growth in the quantum industry, as well as increase accessibility in science. They highlight the importance of developing more open quantum hardware to support the advancement of quantum technologies.
