Nishant Dev emerges victorious in opening round while Shiva Thapa faces defeat

In the first World Boxing Qualification Tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics in Busto Arsizio, Italy, Nishant Dev secured India’s first victory. He emerged victorious in the men’s 71kg category by defeating Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Lewis Richardson of Great Britain in a 3-1 split decision. Nishant took an aggressive approach from the beginning, winning the first two rounds with scores of 4-1 and 5-0. Despite facing multiple attacks from his opponent in the third round, Nishant maintained composure and ultimately clinched the bout.

On the same day, Shiva Thapa, a six-time Asian Championships medallist, faced a tough challenge against Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Abdullaev, the reigning world champion, in the 63.5kg category. Despite putting up a defensive front, Shiva could not withstand Ruslan’s relentless attacks, leading to the referee stopping the contest in the first round.

India has already secured four quotas for Paris 2024 through Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar, Parveen Hooda and Lovlina Borgohain who qualified at the Asian Games last year. With over 590 boxers participating in this tournament and a total of 49 quotas allocated for Paris Olympics (28 men and 21 women), India still has an opportunity to secure more spots through upcoming matches such as youth world champion Ankushita Boro going against Sonvico Emilie of France or national champion Sanjeet facing Aibek Oralbay of Kazakhstan.
