Sanjeet Kumar and Ankushita Boro eliminated

In the opening round of the first World Boxing Qualification Tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Indian boxers Sanjeet Kumar and Ankushita Boro were both eliminated. Ankushita Boro, a former youth world champion, lost to French veteran Sonvico Emilie in the women’s 66kg category. Sanjeet Kumar, the national champion and 2021 Asian Championships gold medallist, was defeated by Kazakh boxer Aibek Oralbay in the men’s 92kg category.

Their exits mean that seven out of nine Indian boxers competing in Italy have now been eliminated, including Shiva Thapa, Deepak Bhoria, Narender Berwal, Jaismine Lamboria, and Lakshya Chahar, who all lost in their opening bouts. The only Indian boxer to win was Nishant Dev in the men’s 71kg category. Mohammed Hussamuddin, a bronze medal winner at the world championships and Commonwealth Games, received a bye in the first round and will face Ireland’s Jude Gallagher in the round of 32.

India has already secured four quotas for Paris 2024 with Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar, Parveen Hooda, and Lovlina Borgohain confirming their berths at the Asian Games last year. Another 45 to 51 boxers will qualify through the second World Qualification Tournament in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3. The first World Olympic boxing qualification tournament will offer a total of 49 quotas for the 2024 Paris Olympics, with 28 for men and 21 for women.
