Invest in scientific research and development, urges Beverly Karplus Hartline

The administration’s Fiscal Year 2025 budget, which was released this Monday, contains a request for essential funding for scientific and engineering research. It is crucial that Senators Jon Tester and Steve Daines, as well as Representatives Ryan Zinke and Matt Rosendale, support this important aspect of the spending plan. These investments are made through various federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the Departments of Defense, Energy, and Agriculture, and the National Institutes of Health. They contribute to America’s national security, energy, biomedical, agricultural, environmental, and other needs while also enhancing our international competitiveness.

As a retired scientist residing in Butte, I want to inform my fellow Montanans that a significant portion of research and development (“R&D”) funding benefits Montana universities, colleges, industry, and start-ups. In the fiscal year 2022 alone, more than $200 million was allocated. The Federal government has historically been the primary supporter of basic research that leads to discoveries which innovative Montanans translate into future technologies and successful businesses.

Economists suggest that up to 85% of America’s long-term economic growth is due to innovation driven by scientific advances. This trend is evident in Montana as well, with the expansion of companies in various sectors including optics, computing, medical diagnostics, agriculture, energy, and pharmaceuticals. These companies offer valuable internships and job opportunities for Montana students, contributing to the state’s economic growth.

By endorsing substantial federal science budgets, Montana’s congressional delegation can continue to propel both the state and the nation towards strong economic growth. It is important to encourage them to support these federal science investments, which yield significant returns in the long run and benefit all Americans.
