Iranian Cleric Expresses Worries About Elections and Economy

A member of the Qom Seminary Scholars has raised concerns about low electoral participation and the failure of government economic policies in Iran. Mohammad-Taghi Fazel-Meybodi noted that over 50% of the population abstained from voting in the recent elections, viewing their non-participation as a form of protest. He urged the government to listen to this message and be more responsive, especially with the upcoming presidential elections approaching.

Additionally, Meybodi warned that the Guardian Council’s practice of banning numerous candidates could hinder efforts to achieve unity. He emphasized the importance of not marginalizing certain groups, as it undermines the cultivation of unity in society.

Expressing disappointment with the government’s performance, Meybodi criticized its failure to fulfill promises and effectively address the economic crisis. He pointed out discrepancies between official statistics and the reality on the ground, particularly regarding inflation rates. Meybodi questioned the perspectives of hardliner cleric Ahmad Alamolhoda on economic issues and called for a comparison of economic performance between President Rouhani’s tenure and the current administration led by President Raisi.

Meybodi indirectly referenced the misappropriation of land by Tehran’s interim Friday Prayer Imam, Kazem Seddiqi, suggesting that such actions have eroded people’s trust in religious leaders. He highlighted a disconnect between rhetoric and reality, expressing skepticism about the effectiveness of current policies in addressing economic challenges and promoting national unity.
