Jackson County stadium measure fails, Chiefs and Royals suffer defeat

The biggest ballot item in the Missouri general municipal election was the Jackson County stadium sales tax. Unfortunately, voters rejected Jackson County Question 1, which would have imposed a 3/8th-cent sales tax for Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals stadium projects. Polls closed on Tuesday at 7 p.m. local time, and the increased sales tax would have contributed to funding a new downtown Kansas City ballpark for the Royals and renovations to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs.

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Chiefs, is the third oldest active NFL stadium, having opened on Aug. 12, 1972, with several renovations over the years. Kauffman Stadium, where the Royals play, is the sixth oldest active MLB stadium, and its first game was on April 10, 1973. Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were part of an ad urging Jackson County voters to approve the sales tax measure, expressing the importance of these stadiums to the community.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt had previously expressed confidence that the measure would pass, but the final result was a rejection by Jackson County residents. Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas acknowledged the strong fan base for both teams and expressed a commitment to working with the Chiefs and Royals to develop a more inclusive and effective process to ensure the teams remain in Kansas City for future generations. Despite the setback, there is optimism for a collaborative approach moving forward to address the stadium funding issue in Kansas City.
