Larry Lucchino, the former Boston Red Sox team president who oversaw the franchise during their three World Series championships, passed away at the age of 78. Lucchino’s tenure with the Red Sox began when John Henry purchased the team in 2001. Over the course of 14 years as team president, Boston claimed World Series titles in 2004, 2007, and 2013, ending the 86-year “Curse of the Bambino”.

One of Lucchino’s notable moves was hiring Theo Epstein as the team’s general manager, which led to several postseason appearances. He also helped heighten the rivalry with the New York Yankees, coining the term “Evil Empire” for their AL East rivals. His ability to assemble a talented front office team is credited with shaping the organization and ensuring its continued success.

Before his time with the Red Sox, Lucchino held positions as team president for the Baltimore Orioles and later as president and CEO of the San Diego Padres. He played a significant role in the design and development of Oriole Park at Camden Yards and Petco Park. In Boston, he led efforts to update and enhance the historic Fenway Park, making improvements such as adding seats on the “Green Monster” wall and modernizing various areas of the ballpark.

Upon joining the Red Sox, Lucchino expressed his reverence for the franchise, calling it “Mecca” and “the top of the mountain” for any baseball executive. His impact on the organization and contributions to the sport of baseball were recognized by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and others within the industry. Larry Lucchino’s legacy as a transformative and influential figure in baseball will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
