Long Beach Welcomes New Director of Health and Human Services: Alison King Brings 25 Years of Experience to the Table

Alison King named as the Director of Long Beach Health Department

Alison King, a seasoned administrator with over 25 years of experience in human services and public health, has been appointed as the new permanent director of the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) after serving as Acting Director since October 2023. With her wealth of knowledge and expertise, King is poised to excel in her new role and make positive changes in the community.

City Manager Tom Modica expressed his confidence in King’s abilities, stating that her critical thinking, innovative problem-solving approach, compassion, and genuine leadership have already had a positive impact on the Health Department and the community it serves. He looks forward to seeing King continue to make positive changes in the community as she takes on her new role as director.

As Director of the Health Department, King will oversee more than 55 programs related to public health services, housing, homelessness, mental health, and family and youth development. She will manage the department’s more than 500 employees across 12 sites in the city and oversee an annual budget of $180 million, primarily funded by federal, state, county, and private sources.

King’s career with the City of Long Beach began in 2005 when she joined the Housing Authority, a bureau within the Health Department. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Bureau Manager in 2016. During her time as Bureau Manager, King successfully managed a $110 million budget that provided subsidized housing for over 7,000 local low-income renters
