Lula criticizes Ecuador’s actions at Mexican embassy, avoids commenting on Venezuela

The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) condemned the action of the Ecuadorian police forces who invaded the Mexican Embassy in Quito on Friday night. This stance was taken less than 24 hours after the incident, while remaining silent about Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro’s decision to annex the Essequibo region in Guyana. In a statement released Saturday morning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed strong disapproval of the Ecuadorian government’s actions in the embassy. The police entered the embassy to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas, who had sought asylum in 2023 after being convicted of corruption.

The Brazilian government’s solidarity with the Mexican government was emphasized in the statement, along with condemnation of the violation of diplomatic conventions by the embassy invasion. President Lula expressed his support for his Mexican counterpart on social media. Following the invasion, Mexico suspended diplomatic relations with Ecuador, as Glas claimed persecution by the Ecuador Attorney General’s Office. The Brazilian government’s quick response to the events in Ecuador contrasts with its silence on Maduro’s annexation of the Guyanese region of Essequibo, which went against a diplomatic agreement made at the end of last year.

Lula, who has been involved in Venezuela’s reintegration into global politics, began to shift his stance after an opposition candidate was prevented from running in Venezuela’s upcoming election. Despite not commenting on Maduro’s actions directly, Brazil’s commitment to peace in the region was reaffirmed by Lula’s international affairs advisor. The creation of “Guiana Essequiba” following a unilateral referendum led by Maduro adds to the long-standing dispute between Venezuela and Guyana over the resource-rich region. The importance of dialogue and diplomatic negotiations was emphasized as a way to resolve the conflict peacefully.
