Mariota and Washington Commanders agree to one-year deal

The Washington Commanders have made several key moves in preparation for the NFL draft and the future of their quarterback position. They recently signed veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota to a one-year contract worth up to $10 million, signaling a change in their approach to the position. Mariota, who has appeared in 90 NFL games and started 74 for various teams, brings experience and depth to the Commanders’ roster.

With Mariota now in the mix, it is more likely that Washington will use their No. 2 pick in the draft on a quarterback. Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye are two potential prospects who could be available if the Commanders choose to address the position early in the draft. However, it is also possible that Washington could draft a quarterback and retain their 2023 starter, Sam Howell, along with Mariota.

Veteran tight end Zach Ertz, who also signed with Washington, emphasized that building a team is an ongoing process and decisions made now may not be final by the start of the season. The Commanders have continued to add to their roster, agreeing to contracts with players like Clelin Ferrell, Nick Allegretti, Dante Fowler, and Jeremy Chinn, as they prepare for the upcoming season.

While the Commanders’ plans for the draft and the quarterback position remain uncertain, their recent signings indicate a proactive approach to addressing key areas of need on their roster. Washington fans will be eagerly anticipating how these moves will shape the team’s future for the upcoming season.
