MHI’s CO2 capture technology chosen for low-carbon hydrogen facility within the HyNet cluster

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has signed a licensing agreement with KBR, its U.S. counterpart, to provide CO2 capture technology for the construction of a low-carbon Hydrogen Production Plant 2 (HPP2) in Cheshire, northwest England. The plant will be built at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex, owned by Essar Group’s EET Hydrogen, and will utilize KBR’s hydrogen production process technology and front-end engineering design (FEED).

As part of the agreement, MHI will license its Advanced KM CDR Process, developed in partnership with Kansai Electric Power, to provide the process design package (PDP) for the new post-combustion CO2 capture plant. The HPP2 is set to have an annual hydrogen production capacity of nearly 230,000 tons, making it the largest low-carbon hydrogen plant in the UK once operational. The project is also integral to the HyNet carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) cluster, with captured CO2 being stored in the depleted gas fields under Liverpool Bay.

EET Hydrogen, leading the hydrogen production projects in the HyNet cluster, was chosen by the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) as an initial cluster, alongside the East Coast cluster. The HPP2 project complements the construction of the Hydrogen Production Plant 1 (HPP1), which is part of EET Hydrogen’s plan for a large-scale low-carbon hydrogen plant infrastructure in the HyNet cluster. HPP1 will have an initial production capacity of 350 MW, capturing around 600,000 tons of CO2 annually.

By combining HPP1 and HPP2, the hydrogen hub will facilitate the transition of local industrial and power generation businesses from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy, significantly reducing the North West’s carbon emissions by 2.5 million tons per year.
