Mikaela Shiffrin set to compete in World Cup slalom in Are, Sweden, but Giant Slalom status uncertain

Mikaela Shiffrin is set to make her return to the World Cup this weekend, after being sidelined due to a knee injury. She sprained the MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her left knee in a crash in Cortina d’Ampezzo, and has been absent from the women’s Alpine World Cup circuit since then.

In a statement released by her team on Monday, it was mentioned that Shiffrin is improving in slalom and feels that competing in the slalom race is still a possibility. However, her participation in the giant slalom race is uncertain at this time. More information is expected to be provided in the coming days. The giant slalom is scheduled for Saturday, with the slalom race following on Sunday. Shiffrin’s publicist also mentioned the likelihood of a virtual press conference on Friday.

Despite being mathematically eliminated from the GS crystal globe, Shiffrin still leads the slalom discipline globe by a significant margin. She is ahead of her closest competitors, Petra Vlhova and Lena Duerr. However, in the overall standings, she has fallen behind Lara Gut-Behrami and Federica Brignone. With only six races left in the season, Shiffrin will need to make up ground to regain her position as a top contender.

Shiffrin shared a training video on Instagram, showcasing her return to the slalom course after nearly 7 weeks. She expressed satisfaction with her progress, indicating that some milestones in her recovery feel more rewarding than others. With her eyes set on the upcoming races in Sweden, Shiffrin is determined to showcase her talent and resilience on the slopes once again.
