However, a team of Japanese researchers has published an article in the journal Joule about a revolutionary technique that could revive completely spent batteries, allowing them to be recharged until they reach 80% of their original capacity. The researchers tested different variants of chemical substances to trigger the expected recovery reaction. By injecting a chemical treatment based on lithium naphthalenide, they were able to significantly increase the charged particles and useful life of the batteries to unexpected levels. While they have not yet achieved a capacity recovery beyond 80%, the results are still promising, especially considering the significant improvement in battery health and duration over 100 charge cycles and discharges.

The researchers from Toyota, Inc. Central R&D Laboratories in Japan have verified the effectiveness of the system not only with small laboratory batteries but also with large automotive batteries. This method could potentially revolutionize the complex and toxic lithium-ion battery recycling process, offering a more sustainable solution for reusing spent batteries.
