New York Yankees star pitcher Gerrit Cole expected to recover without needing Tommy John surgery for elbow injury

The New York Yankees received unfortunate news on Wednesday when it was revealed that their ace pitcher Gerrit Cole would be sidelined for several months due to a ligament issue in his pitching elbow. However, a visit to Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Thursday provided some relief as it was determined that Cole could avoid Tommy John surgery. Instead, he will undergo rest and rehabilitation along with other non-surgical treatments. The New York Post reported that he is expected to be out of action for 10-12 weeks.

Cole, who is 33 years old, joined the Yankees in 2020 after signing a lucrative nine-year, $324 million deal with his childhood team. He had a successful 2023 season, winning his first Cy Young Award. Despite his outstanding performance, the Yankees missed the playoffs that year. With the addition of All-Stars Juan Soto and Marcus Stroman in the offseason, Cole was expected to play a significant role in the team’s comeback in 2023.

In Cole’s absence, the Yankees will rely on pitchers Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, Clarke Schmidt, and Marcus Stroman in their starting rotation. However, they are also looking to add another quality pitcher to their roster. Both Blake Snell and Mike Clevinger, who are free agents, are potential options for the Yankees to consider.

The news of Cole’s injury serves as a setback for the Yankees, but they are determined to make the necessary adjustments to remain competitive in the upcoming season.
