Newsweek readers say Portland boasts the best science museum in the country

Portland is home to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), which was recently named the best science museum in the U.S. in the 2024 Newsweek Readers’ Choice Awards. OMSI was selected as the top museum out of 15 nominees in the category, chosen by a panel of travel experts and editors. The public voted on their favorites throughout February, with the winners being announced on March 7.

OMSI CEO and president, Erin Graham, expressed gratitude and joy at receiving this honor. She highlighted the support from the Portland and Pacific Northwest communities as a major factor in the museum’s success. OMSI is known for creating lasting memories for visitors of all ages over multiple generations.

This is the first time OMSI has received a nomination for the Newsweek Readers’ Choice Awards. The only other West Coast nominee was the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Other top science museums on the list included locations in Albuquerque, Chicago, Minnesota, and Philadelphia. Additionally, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden in Portland placed fourth in the vote for best botanical garden.

At OMSI, an exciting new exhibit called “Tyrannosaurs – Meet the Family” opened recently. This six-month display features life-sized tyrannosaur skeletons, fossil bones, and a 30-foot tunnel where visitors can watch tyrannosaurs exploring modern-day Portland. Tickets for the exhibit range from $14 to $19 depending on age, with free admission for children 3 and younger.
