North Korea Cancels Visit by Japan Following World Cup Qualifying Loss, Media Reports

The World Cup qualifier between North Korea and Japan was reportedly canceled by North Korea just hours after Japan won the match in Tokyo. Japan scored a goal after just 90 seconds and secured a 1-0 victory, maintaining their perfect start in the second round of Asian qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Following the match, Japan Football Association chief Kozo Tashima revealed that North Korea had canceled the scheduled qualifier against Japan in Pyongyang, citing concerns about a “malignant infectious disease” in Japan.

North Korea, with support from a small group of fans, struggled to mount an effective attack during the game and now has only three points from the first three group games. Despite their efforts, they were unable to secure a win. South Korea, on the other hand, was held to a 1-1 draw with Thailand in Seoul in their first game since coach Jurgen Klinsmann was fired in February. Son Heung-min scored the opening goal for South Korea, but Suphanat Mueanta leveled the score shortly after.

Australia continued their winning streak by defeating Lebanon 2-0 in Sydney. They secured the victory with goals from Keanu Baccus and Kye Rowles. Jordan, playing for the first time since losing the Asian Cup final to Qatar in February, won 3-0 against Pakistan. The top two teams from each of the nine groups will advance to the final round of qualifiers. The automatic allocation for Asia at the World Cup has increased from four to eight spots.
