Officials in eastern Kentucky are currently facing a “mental health crisis,” with a surge in suicides in Pike County. In the last 30 days, at least 8 people have taken their own lives, a dramatic increase compared to the 8 suicides reported in the entire year of 2023. Tammy Riley, the Pike County Director of Public Health, highlighted some commonalities among the recent suicides – all were adults ranging from their 30s to 80s, primarily male, and all used firearms as the method.
To address this alarming trend, Riley mentioned that multiple agencies are coming together to tackle the issue. The Mountain Comprehensive Care Center, serving as the primary provider of mental health services in Pike County, is actively involved in the efforts. Additionally, collaboration with the Pike County Coroner’s Office, the Judge Executive’s Office, and resources from the Kentucky Department of Public Health are being utilized to address the crisis.
The county is planning to host several events in the near future to increase awareness about available resources for those in need of mental health support. Riley also emphasized the importance of utilizing the 9-8-8 crisis hotline, which is available 24/7 for individuals experiencing mental distress. By calling or texting 988, individuals can speak to trained professionals who can offer assistance and support.
