Pope Francis Overcomes Health Concerns to Lead Easter Vigil – DW – 03/30/2024

Pope Francis participated in the Easter Vigil at the Vatican on Saturday night, making an appearance a day after missing a Good Friday service to take care of his health. Despite showing signs of being raspy and out of breath, the 87-year-old pontiff managed to deliver a 10-minute homily and baptize eight adults at St. Peter’s Basilica while seated in a chair. Approximately 6,000 people gathered in Vatican City for the event.

During his homily, Pope Francis spoke out against selfishness and indifference in the world and expressed sorrow over the destruction of peace caused by hatred and war. He also talked about the resurrection of Christ, urging Catholics to remove obstacles in their lives that hinder their progress and faith. He called on believers to ask for divine help in removing the heavy burdens that weigh down their souls.

Despite concerns about his health, Pope Francis is scheduled to preside over the Easter Mass on Sunday and give the customary “Urbi et Orbi” blessing. Recent cancellations of engagements due to colds, bronchitis, and the flu have raised questions about his well-being, especially since he had one lung removed earlier in life and currently uses a wheelchair or cane due to knee problems. However, in his memoir published this month, the pontiff expressed that he has no serious issues that would prompt him to consider resigning from his position.
