Reports: Patriots Trading QB Mac Jones to Jaguars in Exchange for Sixth-Round Pick

The New England Patriots are reportedly trading quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick. However, this trade cannot be finalized until the new league year begins Wednesday.

The trade brings to an end the tumultuous relationship between Jones and the Patriots, and may signal the end of Bill Belichick’s tenure as head coach. After a successful rookie season in 2021, where he started all 17 games and made it to the playoffs, Jones struggled in subsequent seasons.

His performance declined in 2022, and in 2023 he faced numerous challenges and was eventually benched in favor of Bailey Zappe. Fans, who had high expectations for Jones as Tom Brady’s replacement, grew impatient with his inconsistent play.

Given the circumstances, the trade appears to be a positive move for both parties. The Patriots, now under new head coach Jerod Mayo, have the third overall pick in the upcoming draft and are expected to select a quarterback to build their future around. Jones, whose potential did not align with his draft position, will have a fresh start as he backs up Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville, his hometown.
