Former world chess champion, Kasparov, now classified alongside Russian ‘terrorists and extremists’

Garry Kasparov, the former world chess champion, has been added to Russia’s list of “terrorists and extremists” by the financial monitoring agency Rosfinmonitoring, according to the RIA state news agency. This move imposes restrictions on Kasparov’s bank transactions and requires him to seek approval each time he wants to use his accounts.

Kasparov, who is 60 years old, has been living outside of Russia since 2014 due to fears of persecution. In addition to being labeled as a “terrorist and extremist,” Kasparov has also been classified as a “foreign agent” by the Russian justice ministry, along with former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky. This designation subjects them to bureaucratic hurdles, including financial reporting requirements.

The move to target Kasparov, known for his opposition to the Kremlin, reflects the ongoing crackdown on dissent in Russia. This latest action by Rosfinmonitoring adds to the challenges faced by Kasparov and other critics of the Russian government.

Kasparov’s media office has not issued a statement regarding his inclusion on the list of “foreign agents” and “terrorists and extremists.” The move comes after Kasparov was banned from entering Russia in March 2021 for failing to comply with an order from a Russian court that required him to attend an appeal hearing over a libel case brought against him by Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
