Russian drone attack in Ukraine leaves seven injured and damages infrastructure

On Wednesday night, Russia launched a drone attack in Ukrainian regions, resulting in at least seven people being injured and damage to energy infrastructure and residential and commercial buildings. According to officials, Ukraine’s air defenses successfully shot down 38 out of 42 Russian drones across the country. This was one of the largest Russian drone attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks.

The Air Force reported that suicide drones were shot down in various regions of the country, including the southern, central, western, and northeastern parts. The attacks in some regions lasted between two to four hours. The Ministry of Energy revealed that an energy infrastructure facility in the western region of Khmelnytskyi was damaged, leaving over 14,000 consumers in 30 settlements without electricity. Additionally, a transmission line in the Dnipropetrovsk region was also damaged.

Russian forces have consistently targeted Ukraine’s energy system during the cold months, aiming at different facilities such as power plants and electricity distribution. The World Bank estimated the damage in the Ukrainian energy sector to be approximately $12 billion. Despite these attacks and challenges, Ukraine managed to navigate through the winter season without major power outages due to enhanced anti-aircraft defense, milder weather conditions, and efforts to repair infrastructure.

In Sumi, located in the northeast of the country, a drone attack resulted in damage to at least 13 residential houses, kindergartens, and around 40 passenger cars. Regional officials reported that seven people, including a ten-year-old boy, were injured in Sumi. The situation remains tense as Ukrainian authorities closely monitor and respond to ongoing threats posed by drone attacks.
