Shell and Bloom Energy Partner to Develop Sustainable Hydrogen Production through Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Technology

Shell explores Bloom Energy’s Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) technology for hydrogen production in the energy sector.

Shell is collaborating with Bloom Energy to explore the use of solid oxide electrolyzer (SOEC) technology for potential hydrogen production at its facilities. The goal is to develop replicable, large-scale SOEC systems that can produce hydrogen for potential use at Shell assets. KR Sridhar, founder, Chairman, and CEO of Bloom Energy, believes that this partnership could be transformative in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors by providing a more sustainable hydrogen production method.

Hydrogen plays a crucial role in refining processes, improving the quality of petroleum products, and enabling the processing of various types of crude oils. However, most of the hydrogen used in refining is produced through fossil fuel processes with significant carbon emissions. By exploring electrolyser technology, Shell aims to decarbonise its existing refineries and reduce its environmental impact.

SOEC is a high-temperature electrolysis method that uses solid ceramic material as the electrolyte to split water at temperatures up to 800°C. This high temperature reduces the electrical energy required, making the process more efficient compared to low-temperature electrolysis methods. Bloom Energy successfully operated a 4MW SOEC at a NASA research center, demonstrating increased hydrogen production efficiency compared to low-temperature electrolysers.

Shell’s collaboration with Bloom Energy and the exploration of SOEC technology shows the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and reducing carbon emissions in its operations. By investing in innovative hydrogen production methods, Shell is taking steps towards a more sustainable future for the oil and gas industry.
