At NRF 2024, the Innovation Lab showcased cutting-edge technology solutions that could revolutionize the retail industry. One of these solutions was the smart shopping cart, also known as “headless checkout.” Wink CEO Deepak Jain explained that this concept is already being used in Asia and is expected to make its way to North America soon. The checkout process can occur anywhere with no need for a credit card, as all necessary information is already entered into the system on an opt-in basis. This platform is also device agnostic, meaning it can be used on any device.
Jain highlighted several potential use cases for grocers, including preventing minors from purchasing age-restricted products and enabling shoppers to retrieve ordered products from smart lockers. He mentioned that one grocer had expressed interest in adopting the solution for the latter use.
Bold Commerce co-founder Jay Myers emphasized that the platform could address the issue of cart abandonment in e-commerce by speeding up the transaction process. No credit card is required to complete an order, which makes it easier for consumers to make purchases quickly and easily.
In response to concerns about security, Jain assured that the platform is equipped to distinguish between similar-looking individuals and living people versus dummies or photographs. In cases of doubt, the authentication process is enhanced by requesting the individual’s voice, as each person’s voice is unique.
The future of technology looks exciting with possibilities that could include showing your face before retrieving items from a smart locker, as demonstrated at NRF 2024. With its ability to streamline checkout processes and improve security, smart shopping carts are poised to transform retail in the years to come.
