The first flu-related death in Clark County has been reported by the Southern Nevada Health District, which is also seeing an increase in hospitalizations and people seeking care for influenza-like illness. This has prompted the Health District to urge everyone to get the flu vaccine.
Dr. Fermin Leguen, District Health Officer, expressed his condolences to the man’s family and friends, while emphasizing the seriousness of the flu. He urged everyone to get vaccinated and practice healthy habits to protect themselves and their loved ones.
While flu season typically peaks between December and February, it can last until May. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months and older get the vaccine each year, with certain groups, such as older adults and those with medical conditions, being more at risk for severe illness.
Flu vaccines are available at Health District clinics, doctor’s offices, and pharmacies throughout Southern Nevada. In addition to getting vaccinated, the Health District also advises people to take simple preventative measures such as washing hands frequently, staying home when sick, and covering coughs and sneezes.
