A recent study has revealed that consuming two liters of diet drinks per week can increase the risk of atrial fibrillation in adults, compared to those who consume smaller amounts. However, those who drink the same amount of sugar-sweetened beverages had a lower risk of this heart rhythm disorder. On the other hand, consuming orange juice or vegetable juice in similar quantities also increased the risk compared to lower sugary drink consumption.

The researchers also noted that smoking could increase the risk of atrial fibrillation, especially when combined with high sugary drink consumption. Drinks sweetened with sucralose, aspartame, saccharin, and asulfame posed the highest risk.

To lower the risk of atrial fibrillation, the researchers recommended reducing or avoiding sugary or artificially sweetened beverages whenever possible. Even low-calorie drinks could be potentially dangerous in this context.
